Although Qatar was populated as early as 4,000 BCE, Doha is a thoroughly modern city, filled with skyscrapers and an eclectic mix of contemporary architecture, right on the Persian Gulf. Since Qatar's building boom began in earnest in 2004, the population has doubled, and Doha is now a cultural hub for the region, hosting the Doha Tribeca Film Festival and world-class museums, such as the Museum of Islamic Art.
