We are currently seeking an Interior Designer I to work in our Minneapolis, MN office. The Interior Designer I will participate, as a team member, and help in project development and design issues, including creative and concept development, and participate as required for all phases of projects meeting or exceeding the client’s business objectives; from programming, schematic design and design development, construction documents and furniture specification, and to a limited extent oversight of design intent during CD and CA phases with a professional alignment of project schedule and budget. Collaborate with the Senior Designer and assist as appropriate on the regular and periodic NELSON Design Reviews.
Responsibilities:
- Function as a designer on designated projects, generally smaller in scope and complexity and standards based.
- Participate with the Project Manager and/or Senior Designer to understand/establish project goals and objectives including but not limited to work plan, schedule and budget parameters.
- Attend meetings with clients, consultants, contractors and vendors as delegated.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of the project standards library, including CAD and detail standards and procedures, and assist in maintaining the resource library.
- Participate during trade or industry events or manufacturers product introductions proactively as needed.
- Act as a team resource during the programming and design phases, and the coordination of documents.
- Participate in aspects of project development from programming through conceptualization, design development and construction documents.
- Participate in existing conditions surveys and architectural base and/or interior record plans preparation.
- Participate in furniture and equipment inventories, document and prepare appropriate reports.
- Assist in or prepare programming questionnaires for use during interview process and set up project files.
- Assemble the program data and prepare the program report for review by the Project Manager, Senior Designer, prior to presentation to the client.
- Validate and update, as necessary, the programming data.
-Develop space plans that are responsive to and conform to the program requirements and client’s goals and objectives.
- Prepare conceptual design sketches that illustrate the architectural treatment of the space, develop concept statements and develop concept and presentation in the NELSON presentation formats.
- Design and assemble presentation boards, including furniture and finishes, concept statement and design abstract within the NELSON presentation standards.
- Attend client presentations when appropriate.
- Research products and systems that accomplish the design intent.
- Prepare furniture and finish recommendations and alternatives, including budgets.
- Develop plans, elevations and architectural details that illustrate the design intent and use of materials.
- Participate in the development of construction documents and specifications to insure compliance with design intent.
- Prepare furniture drawings and specifications.
- During the construction phase assist in the preparation of document revisions such as addenda, bulletins and clarification sketches.
- As requested by PM, Senior Designer assist in the review of the contractor’s submissions for compliance with the design intent.
- Assist in review as requested of the production of furniture, millwork and equipment contract shop documents.
- During the construction phase attend job site meetings, on “as requested” basis to review elements of the construction and furnishing placement to ensure compliance with the design intent of the approved construction documents.
- Participate in the punch list process.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in Architecture or Interior Design.
- Certificate or Registration of Interior Design preferred. LEED AP accreditation preferred.
- Professional membership and active participation in Industry Associations i.e. IIDA and ASID preferred.
- AutoCAD skills required, Strong Revit skills a must.
- Working knowledge of MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Larson and Paul Architects, is a mid-sized Architecture and Interiors firm. We are currently hiring to fill a position in our retail / commercial group. Our work in this area consists mainly of design and documentation of retail stores and office spaces for J McLaughlin, a large clothing design company located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn as they expand nationwide.
We are looking for the following candidate:
Junior Architect, 2-5 years of office experience
- Architecture degree (B Arch or M Arch).
- Experience building drawings for retail store fit-outs: millwork, furniture, storefront glazing, space-planning.
- Strong visual and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a small team directly with owner and contractors on multiple projects.
- Legal US work status.
- AutoCAD Skills.
