West Chin Architect is an award-winning / published architecture and interior design firm in downtown Manhattan, seeking a mid-level to senior architectural designer (4-6 year experience minimum in high end modern residential). Majority of our work is executing high end residential design, from ground up construction to loft renovations to townhouses. In addition, we also design for commercial clients, and we have a furniture / accessory line and a recently-opened retail store.
Responsibilities:
The designer will act as team member under the direction of the Project Manager and will collaborate with the Principal. He or she is a team member in the design of a project from conceptualization, through development, coordination, documentation and execution in the field.
The Designer’s core responsibilities are:
Design
- As part of the team, prepare designs to meet the clients’ objectives, project constraints, and execution of the firm’s design vocabulary and philosophy, with limited supervision required.
- Research materials, prepare programming diagrams and design presentations, including mood boards and quick 3D hand sketches as needed to convey the design intent.
Development.
- Assist on the development of the whole project keeping in mind WCA’s vocabulary, client goals and senior directives.
- Review documents to ensure they incorporate and accurately reflect the design intent.
- Mentor and assist junior designers.
Coordination
- Represent the firm and the design in consultant coordination meetings.
- Participate in design coordination within firm i.e. between architecture, decorators and graphics, and between clients, consultants and the firm.
- Liaise with vendors and manufacturers.
Documentation
- Work as a team to create and deliver presentations and contract documents based on the firm’s standards.
- Produce and deliver quality and timely sets of contract documents, including drawings, specifications, sample boards, and reports as required for each unique project.
- Review own work for corrections, improvement and overall professional development.
Execution
- Respond to RFIs and resolve issues and problems that arise during construction.
- Review submittals, shop drawings, substitutions and field conditions for conformance with the design.
- Attend and report on field visits.
- Conduct punch lists reviews.
Requirements:
- BA/BS minimum degree required. A minimum of (4-6) years’ experience at an architecture or interior design firm, preferably in NYC high end residential / commercial design.
- Strong skills in creating BID sets and CD sets with a clear understanding of modern residential high-end detailing.
- Fluency in all Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD; Fluency in Sketchup and 3DMax is desirable, though not required.
- Must be able to work in a collaborative, proactive and multi-tasking environment.
- An important aspect of this position is having a discerning eye for design and a particular interest and experience in high end modern residential.
- Must be able to listen, interpret, communicate and articulate our design to a client while balancing the needs and expectations of the clients.
- Must be a self-sufficient, critical thinker able to anticipate the next steps.

We are looking for an individual with an advanced degree in architecture, exceptional design and rendering skills and a minimum of two years post graduate experience. REVIT/BIM experience a plus.
